Adding an additional power source to your home or even replacing a traditional gas or electric system with solar panels or wind turbines is an alternative for many homeowners today.
Installing Solar or Wind power units for your home can not only help save you dollars on your heating and electric bills, but help save the planet. As more and more people use greener solutions for energy production in the household, it is creating a more sustainable ecology for the world.
One of the options that many people are looking into is building your own windmill or wind power system. The DIY or do it yourself models have been big sellers and are quite popular, as they provide the means to getting your own home wind power but also can save on the cost significantly as well.
The range of the cost varies greatly and can be anywhere from several hundred dollars to over $20,000 for a particular system, depending on your needs.
It all depends on how much energy you are using and where your home is and the environment of your area in particular. In a very urban and crowded area it will not be as effective as it would in a rural and more open environment as the city and urban areas tend to limit the amount of energy that can be created by such windmill units.
Very rarely, if ever, do these home wind turbines generate enough power to eliminate the need for gas and oil, but they can reduce your bills and also lower your carbon footprint significantly, which is important to many as well as saving money.

I say, it depends. Because of the fact that the effect of these two alternative power sources are very circumstantial. If you live in a rather sunny region, then go for the solar but if your in the windy and/or cloudy part, then go for the wind. Check your areas climate, it should help you decide.
I would use solar because it is more reliable. With wind you may not get enought to power much of what you want unless you live in a wind tunnel
I recently read an article that a family complained to the utility company about a wind turbine close to their home was causing physical problems due to the loud, deep roar of the blades. They claimed it sounded like a jet gearing up to take off or a train rumbling down the track. It was a physical assault upon their hearing and affecting their health.
Due to that info, I say go with solar!
solar is more viable for hot water, try draping a garden hose back and forth on a rooftop,on a hot sunny day the water that comes out would be too hot for you to use, found that out by accident, for electricity it would probally be a good bet to go with both unless you plan to build a large wind turbine, some companys lease land to place wind turbines [the really big ones] people have however complained in the past about everything from the sound to sunlight flickering off the blades
First of all, it’s very unlikely that a person can save money with homemade electricity. You might use the sun to heat water, cook food, or warm your rooms, and that would displace some power. Or you could dry your clothes on a clothesline and displace some power.
If you are willing to buy commercially made stuff, wind is about half the price of photovoltaic, but that’s only for those few lucky people that have a suitable site. Micro hydro (a water turbine) is even more cost efficient, but you need to have a year-round stream on your property.
