the size of your home is irelevent. you only have to wory about your power draw. check your circuit breaker box for the amperage your house runs on. it never hurts to have a generator that can produce more than ever needed(they last way longer) a friend of mine has a litle one room camp. they use a big comercial honda 4 cylinder water cooled generator that has the whole electric starter. it has 2 phase power and can produce way more power than they could ever draw. because it is so big, it runs at a very low throtle and is supper quiet. remember that a bigger engin will use less fuel compared to a smaller engin at the same load. not only that, but engins that have less strain on them, last substantialy longer. some people run small generators that are runing near full throtle. the engin is working so hard, that they wear out long before they should. if the generator is rated for high output, it will be very easy for it to run, hence, it will last for a long time.
if you are looking at backup generators. many companies make generators that start automaticly when the power goes out.
