If building new, incorporate solar, it is no cost, ground water heat pumps do well and can be combined in floor heat for even lower operational costs. Of course if you want to gather your fuel, put in a stove.

The A.F.U.E rating on the equipment will tell you that. If it’s 78% efficient it has an AFUE rating of 78%. All heating equipment is rated this way, so ask your local HVAC contractor for equipment with the highest rating. Last I heard, some forced-air systems were rated as high as 96%.

In-floor heating systems utilizing hot water boilers. They cost a bit more to install but they are definitely worth it, especially if you live in a country/state that mostly has a cold climate.
BTW the worst one is heated forced air, terrible way of heating a house and a waste of several energy sources.
