What heat insulation when building outdoor pethouse?

My friend and I are building cat boxes for stray cats this winter. We are starting with plastic tubs with entry holes cut out. We want to insulate the boxes and want to know of any ideas for what to use for insulation. We thought about styrofoam or water heater insulation to wrap around the outside of the boxes. Our budget is small. Let us know of any ideas you have. Thanks. Kim and Sue in Oregon.

You don’t say how cold it will get. But I live in Vermont and it gets 20 degrees below zero regularly during the winter. There are plenty of "barn cats" that live through that weather.
So I would recommend just providing lots of straw in the boxes for them to snuggle into and maybe some old blankets if you have some. Keep the boxes small. Cover the entrance hole with a piece of cloth to help keep out the wind. Put the entrance facing south and in an area that get lots of sun during the winter. For the summer put them in the shade. If possible put them in an area protected from wind and rain.
Styrofoam (at least an inch thick) will work as an insulation but you will need to put it on the inside of the boxes for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
By the way…thanks for helping to protect the homeless.
