What do you recommend to make your lawn greener and healthier?
I’m sick of having brown patches, and overall, a discolored lawn. Before I buy any fertilizer or turf-builder, I thought I’d ask here. Thanks

– A soil test, so you apply the right amounts of fertilizer and lime
– a freshly sharpened or new lawnmower blade
– a ruler, so you know when to mow.
Nitrogen will green up the lawn.
Fertilizer bags have 3 numbers on them, the 1st number is the percentage of nitrogen, the 2nd is the % of phorphos and the 3rd is the % of potassium.
A 20 -15 – 8, (or numbers something like that) would be a good choice.
Epsom Salts — sprinkle right before a good rain. Don’t sprinkle if you can’t immediately water or "rain it in". You’ll find bags of it in most garden stores now — or at WMart. It will be better if it’s a rain event.
Nitrogen rich fertilizer, such as 28-1-1.
I would recommend going to your county extension office and getting a sample kit and taking samples of your lawn per instructions. It will tell you where to send it and what the cost is. They will test it and report back to you as to what you need.
Fish Emulsions it can be expensive and My guess is you would need at least two bottles but it does wonders it will green it up and make it grow really fast and fill in bare spots!
nothing’s gonna work if you dont figure out the problem. I would talk to a nursery or hyrdroseeding company in your area. The brown patches may not be from a lack of fertilizer, could be from some mold or rotting organic matierials (snow rot, etc)
Look at your grass, try to identify the species of turf grass, ie; rye grass, st augustine, blue grass, bermuda, etc…find out what grows best for your climate. Brown spots can be from overly shaded areas and the wrong style grass isnt gonna grow well…
Test the soil, is good sound advice. Make sure your grass is getting the right amount of sun and WATER. Too much water will cause molds to grow and moss can take over, as well as clover and nasty weeds.
Ive been told to fertilize grass every 6 weeks, mine stays green-even with feeding it twice a season (once in spring and a fall food) It could be from too much thatch, may need to be power-raked & aerated too. You could contact a local lawn-care company and have them take a look and see what they suggest-but pay the man for his time.
The best fertilizer, is 16-16-16 *thats the multi-purpose of all fertilizers. Any food that has a higher nitrogen content will make your grass more green-also run the chance of causing chemical burns if the stuff isnt applied correctly–which then causes MORE browning of the grass blades.
Its takes time and money to provide for your grass…its tough work too. It may suit you to have a fertilizer company come out and spray your lawn-its easy and they KNOW what they are doing…you then dont need to worry about a spreader, where to buy & store the granuals, etc.. good luck.
get a book from the library-lawns for dummies-its got a good basic outline of how to manage your lawn.
