The Chicago Center for Green Technology has a lot of info to help you. You may want to get the structure evaluated to make sure it will handle the extra weight before you begin. Good luck with the project.

What do you mean?
Dear n92305,
I have a standing offer to pay cash money for a picture of your roofers face when he discovers that the roof leak he needs to repair is buried under tons of dirt and daffodils.
Do him and yourself a favor by going with a conventional roof. If you want horticulture on your roof, plant it in containers that can be moved when (not if) the roofing needs attention.
For energy efficiency the best "green" roofs are white. Either choose a roofing material that comes in bright white or seal the existing roof with white elastomeric roof coating.
Mule Hide products offers a green roofing system and a pretty good explanation on it. If it’s for a school project call your local ABC Supply company they own mule hide and I’m sure they will get you all the info u need on it.
