How can I get a professional hard rock sound from my electric guitar?
I just play along to CDs at home. I’ve owned several electric guitars and amplifiers (no high end stuff), and some effects. I’m a pretty good guitar player, technically, but have had little luck getting the sound I want. I find myself only using the bridge pickup and high treble with maxed volume in an attempt to get my tone to cut through with distortion. I get almost no sustain. I like hard rock guitar sounds like from Tool, Deftones, and Killing Joke. Any suggestions on a mid-priced guitar setup (guitar, amp & effect) that sounds like it’s off of a CD with unmuddied distortion and with tons of sustain?

I am a professional my self, I have played for about 23 years, I recently bought a Beheringer V-Tone GMX 210, it has a built in Digital effex processor and midi interface, it gos for $199.00, @ Guitar Center, Muscian’s Friend and AMS, after tax mine came to $229.00. I play the Blues, and good Blues amps usualy cost alot of $$. This does everything i need, and then some. no need for peddles, or spendy rack devices, every thing is built in.just plug in and play, also available is the midi footswitch for $149.00 but that can be added later. hope this helps
YOUR NOT ASKING FOR MUCH!!!! MOST OF THESE SETUPS ARE SERIOUS PREAMPS AND TONS OF STUDIO GEAR. . .YOU’LL HAVE TO GO TO YOUR NEAREST GUITAR CENTER OR WHATEVER. . .AND CHECK OUT GEAR. . .BOOGIE, MARSHALL, CARVIN. . .ITS NOT AN EASY ONE TO ANSWER. . .
My suggestion would be to look into a MIDI pickup for your guitar. Really you could use a generic old guitar to start with. you should also look into some software.
Another choice would be to invest in a mutli effects unit, not individual kick switches. You can get them starting at as low $300, and much as you want to spend. Kramer used to make a guitar with a sustain pickup that was battery powered that was cool, it was also made by ASI (Audio Sounds of Indianapolis[i think]). that was a cool sustain. Do some research into electronics, or even a analog keyboard you can run your guitar through to get some cool sounds.
Without spending to much I would investigate MIDI.
I’m not a guitar player but my friend who is has a simple digital multi-effects pedal with programmable parameters and an onboard
delay, chorus and reverb-they mimic the sound well and are inexpensive.
buy a distortion pedal and find something unigue but maybe even radio freindly
Boss peddles used to be the popular choice, along with a Marshall amp , preferably valve RMS.
